This Day in History

Since this past Sunday was my birthday, I decided to see what other types of interesting stuff happened on June 1st throughout history, and comment on how much this event may or may not have effected my life.  I just picked out the random things that I found interesting.  Soo…….here we go.

  • 1792    Kentucky became the 15th state of the union.  Thus ushering in numerous jokes about people from Kentucky
  • 1796    Tennessee became the 16th state.  Allowing for the eventual creation of the hated and lame University of Tennessee, I don’t even need to explain this.
  • 1925    Baseball Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig’s streak of playing in 2,130 consecutive games began when he pinch hit for shortstop Pee Wee Wanniger.  Thus begining the trend that amazing things happen on this date.
  • 1926    Actress Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortensen in Los Angeles.  Solidifying the aforementioned trend and creating a new one that beautifull and awesome people are also born on this day
  • 1944    The British Broadcasting Corp. aired a coded message intended to inform the French resistance that the D-Day invasion was imminent.  Nazis were not very cool.  And…this also affects me in that my grandmother is from england and met my grandfather during WW2….so the obvious end of this war and the triumphant return is a somewhat noteworthy event in my past.
  • 1980    CNN made its debut.  I am amazingly apolitical and don’t really care about current events.  How is it that the television channel of which I have no doubt watched the least of out of every channel under the sun, began the same day as me.  BS.
  • 2007    The FDA warned consumers to avoid using toothpaste made in China because it might contain a poisonous chemical used in antifreeze.  Just like Sharon Stone said, damn Chinese!!
  • 2007    Assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian walked out of a Michigan prison, where he’d spent eight years for ending the life of a man suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease.  If your gonna kill yourself, go out with a little flare.  Jump off a building.  Shotgun in the greenhouse…etc….etc.

LOTS MORE

 In Music:

  • 1961, Elvis Presley was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Surrender’, his eighth UK No.1.  Good Song
  • 1967    The album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” by the Beatles was released.  I’m not a super super beatles fan…but continuing the trend of great things on this day….
  • 1968, Simon and Garfunkel went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Mrs Robinson’. Featured in the Dustin Hoffman and Ann Bancroft film ‘The Graduate.’  I’ve always thought that Ann Bancroft was pretty cute…and I do like S&G
  • 1972, the first day of recording took place at Abbey Road studios, London on what would become Pink Floyds album ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’.  Great things……Great things
  • 1991, David Ruffin of The Temptations died of a drug overdose.  Apparently Great things come to an end on this day as well…..
  • 2005, White Stripes singer Jack White married his girlfriend, British model Karen Elson in a canoe on the Amazon in Brazil.  He would.  Jesus
