I’ve never even seen The Goonies, I don’t even know what its about
I had a late conversation with two girls I know just the other night, and somehow the topic turned to movies. Now, If you are the type that gets offended by an unabashed lack of movie knowledge, stop reading now. So somehow one of the girls mentioned that she likes John Cusack, and I mentioned that I had watched Say Anything earlier that day. With a perplexed look on her face, she inquires, whats that? After a brief inquiry, I discover that she has never seen Say Anything, Better off Dead, License to Drive, and actually that she didn’t even know who Corey Haim was. Normally I would assume that I am just old, but both these girls are 23 and had plenty of time to view these classics. Hell, they still come on all the time. Finally after a nerve racking 15 minutes of me yelling at them about the impossibility that they could have lived their lives in a such a television centered society and how they could even function as adults without being exposed to such youth molding classics. So, in one last desperation act, one last hail mary as the clock is expiring, I say. Please tell me you have at least seen The Goonies? I must quote this exactly, girl #2 says, “I have never seen The Goonies, I don’t even know what it is about.”
At this point I should have thrown them both out of my house and just washed my hands of the whole affair. Alas, I brought them both back inside like the culturally homeless that they are, and proceeded to lecture them on the value of both classic pop culture and vinyl records. One fell asleep, and the other just got lost. I did get one of them to admit that she had seen Stand by Me, and had just watched Sixteen Candles for the first time last week. Moral victory……I guess. That being said, the moral of this story is that all of you new and aspiring parents, raise your kids on 80’s movies, and 90’s Pop….they’ll love you for it.
